The Rescue Story

  • During the Holocaust Andrzej and Helena Sliwka and young children lived in the village of Podszkodzie, located 6 km. from Ostrowiec. They helped hide 3 Ostrowiec Jews : Rachmiel (Ralph) Waldman, Harry Fish and Shaya Zweigman who escaped from the barracks at the steel factory, prior to the deportation to Auschwitz .
  • After the war, the survivors moved to Canada, but kept in touch with the Sliwka family. When Mr Sliwka was ill, they helped send medicine/Penicillin from Canada which was hard to get in Poland.
  • In the 1960s, Ralph (Rachmiel) Waldman his 2 rescued friends,  helped the Sliwka family by assisting their daughter Elizabeth move to Canada. Ralph helped Elizabeth with living arrangement and then later in  the marriage arrangements when she married Richard Bogacki. Later a brother and sister also immigrated to Canada from Poland.
