Max Ostro
Max Ostro was born in Szydłowiec, Poland in 1926 to Shmuel and Sara Chana Ostrowiecki. Shmuel was a chassid of the Ostrovtzer Rebbe, Rav Meir Yechiel Halstock, and Max learned at the yeshiva of the Rebbe’s son Rabbi Yechezkel. During the roundup of Jews to Treblinka, Max’s parents urged him and his brother Chanina to jump from the speeding train to Treblinka. Both Max’s parents, and his brothers Chanina and Yechezkel Binyamin, were killed in the Holocaust.
Max’s story has been published in Hebrew and English “My Leap from the Train to Treblinka.”
More details about Max’s life and Ostrowiec experiences will be posted in the near future on the Jews of Ostrowiec Memorial Project website.
